Google AI Overviews vs. ChatGPT Search: What website owners can actually control

A fact-based comparison of crawl access, index eligibility, search visibility, and the controls website owners should understand.

11 min read

Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT Search are different products, but neither is unlocked by a secret content format. Website owners control whether public pages are accessible, crawlable, technically eligible, and useful. They do not control every query, answer, citation, or model selection.

Separate eligibility from inclusion

Google’s AI features guidance says pages must be indexed and eligible for a Search snippet, with no additional technical requirements. Its generative-AI guide says the normal SEO foundation remains important and warns against special files and hacks.

OpenAI documents OAI-SearchBot as the crawler used to surface sites in ChatGPT search, separate from GPTBot’s potential training use. Allowing a crawler makes a page eligible for discovery; it does not guarantee a citation.

Build one strong page, not five variants

Google explicitly warns against creating separate pages for every wording variation, over-focusing on chunking, or relying on `llms.txt`. Write one page that answers the reader’s actual question, uses descriptive headings, includes original evidence, and links to deeper material where useful.

Use internal links with descriptive anchor text and keep canonical URLs stable. A clear information architecture helps both people and systems understand how related guides fit together.

Measure exposure honestly

Use Search Console for web performance and the generative AI report when the property has access. Track impressions, clicks, qualified visits, and conversions rather than promising a universal AI ranking score. For ChatGPT Search and other answer engines, distinguish observed referrals from unverified mentions.

The existing AI search guide covers crawler access and search visibility in more detail.

Compare the systems by user task

Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT search are different experiences, even when both answer a question with web context. Google documents how AI features in Search fit into Search, while OpenAI documents search behavior and citations. Compare the task, query formulation, citations, freshness, and follow-up behavior rather than treating the interfaces as interchangeable rankings.

A website owner should ask what a searcher can discover, which page is cited, and whether the result accurately represents the page. Visibility in one product is not proof of visibility in the other, and neither interface turns an unsupported claim into verified research.

DimensionStudy question
DiscoveryWhich sources are surfaced for the same task?
CitationCan a reviewer reach and verify the cited page?
FreshnessHow does each result represent recent changes?
Follow-upDoes the next question preserve the right context?

Use a controlled comparison plan

A credible comparison should predefine a query set, intent categories, date, location, device, logged-in state, and scoring rubric. Run the same tasks in each product as closely as the interfaces allow, preserve screenshots and citations, and record missing or unavailable results. This is a research plan until the observations are collected.

Avoid inventing market-wide percentages from a small prompt set. Report the sample, exclusions, and uncertainty. Repeat the exercise over time if the question concerns freshness, because search products and source pages change. The Google AI optimization guidance is a useful primary source for the website-side context.

Interpret citations carefully

A citation indicates that a system surfaced a source; it does not by itself establish that every sentence is supported. Review whether the cited passage answers the question, whether the page is current, and whether the answer combines several sources into a conclusion no single source makes.

For ongoing competitor research, store the source URL and capture date alongside the assistant output. The website change monitoring workflow can provide a factual timeline that search-result observations alone cannot.
